Spring Roundup 3.18.16: Western softball, Orange baseball pick up wins

Giving up 14 hits isn’t usually a recepie for a victory in softball, Orange County managed to overcome a Spotsylvania barrage to scratch out a 9-7 victory Thursday night.

 

Orange scored six first inning runs and built a 8-3 lead by the end of the third. But a rough fifth inning for Orange allowed Spotsylvania to claw back into it at 8-6, though Orange held on for the narrow win.

 

Tearra Goode went 2-for-4 with a double and a single. Lexi Lomax knocked in three runs while Taylor Hensley had a triple and two RBI. Lindsey Slaughter ripped a double.

 

The Hornets face William Monroe Friday at Monroe at 6 p.m.

 

Big inning lifts Orange baseball

 

Orange County’s baseball team scored four runs in the fifth inning to hold off Spotsylvania with a 4-2 victory Thursday night.

 

Bradley Hanner did the heavy lifting for the Hornets, striking out 10 while scattering four hits and allowing just a single earned run.

 

The Hornets took advantage of their limited scoring chances, with Caleb Clenney, Hanner and Keenan Williams each registering one RBI. The Hornets had just six total hits as a team, all of them singles and with all six coming from different batters.

 

Orange also overcame five team errors to pick up the victory.  

 

Western softball drops Covenant

 

A huge night at the plate for Olivia Markopoulos helped spark Western Albemarle’s softball team to an 8-1 win over Covenant Thursday night.

 

Markopoulos went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and a single against the Eagles. Kara Madison and Jenny Belling combined for the win in the circle with Belling starting and Madison closing the door. Belling struck out and walked just one during her five-inning effort. 

 

Makayla Shifflett scored three times for the Warriors, reaching base on a pair of singles and a walk. Lacey Pugh reached base four times with two singles, a double and a hit-by-pitch. Belling also had a double.

 

Albemarle softball beats Massaponax

 

The Albemarle softball team opened the season with a 5-1 victory over Massaponax.

 

The Patriots got a huge lift from Khouri Turner’s 4-for-4 night that included two doubles, a triple and a single. She knocked in two runs and scored two more.

 

Sabrina Shisbey had a pair of hits while Ellie Cain carried the load in the circle with a complete game effort where the pitcher scattered four hits and allowed just the single run.

 

Louisa County softball hammers Charlottesville

 

The Louisa County softball team blew past Charlottesville 21-3 Thursday night, with Taylor Robinson going 5-for-5 with two doubles and a home run to lead the Lions’ offense.

 

Kennadie Batchelor also checked in with a 5-for-5 performance, ripping a pair of doubles.

 

Morgan Mitchell and Sarah Proctor blasted a home run each for Louisa. Abbey Hudson handled duties in the circle for the Lions to pick up the victory with Hannah Fletcher closing.

 

Other scores

 

Fork Union baseball fell 3-1 to Benedictine, with Brent Lowry going 2-for-3 for the Blue Devils.

 

Monticello girls soccer beat Powhatan 3-0 with Samantha Payne, Aly Becker and Rana Abdel-Rahman scoring goals for the Mustangs.

 

Goochland baseball trounced Cumberland 23-0 with Tanner Bradshaw going the distance on the mound while also blasting a homerun.

 

Goochland softball beat Cumberland 11-0 with Kailyn Spencer struck out 12 and hit a home run and a triple. Sarah Ramsbottom went 3-for-3 for the Bulldogs.

 

Tandem girls soccer shut out Richmond Christian 5-0, with Laila Whynott notching a hat trick while Emma Johnson and Shannon Clark had a goal each.
