Spring Roundup 3.17.16: Orange softball, Western girls tennis snag wins

Orange County’s softball team picked up a 5-4 victory over Madison County Wednesday night, bouncing back from a tough first inning to snag the win with a strong all-around effort from Tearra Goode.

The Hornets went down 4-1 to the Mountaineers in the first inning. Orange slowly rallied, cutting the lead to 4-3 in the third inning before taking control with a pair of fifth inning runs.

From there Goode locked things down in the circle, holding Madison scoreless in the fifth, sixth and seventh to make the 5-4 advantage hold up. Goode, who relieved Courtney Wright in the third, provided much of her own run support. Goode had four RBI in a 3-for-3 performance, ripping a two-run home run and a pair of doubles while also drawing a walk..

Hannah Jones had two singles and went 2-for-4 for the Hornets. Lexi Lomax went 2-for-3 with a triple and a single.

Madison pitched Megan Shifflett until the fifth when they brought in Logan Estes.

The Hornets (1-0) play Spotsylvania Thursday at 5 p.m. in Orange.
