Spring Roundup 3.16.16: Albemarle boys lacrosse, Orange baseball notch victories

Albemarle’s boys lacrosse team put together a strong second half to pull away from Douglas Freeman Tuesday night, winning 13-9 to open the Patriots’ season.

 

Ian Davis led the offensive assault with four goals and two assists for Albemarle while Ethan Blundin and Hunter Johnson put together a hat trick each.

 

Lorenz Brown finished with two goals and an assist, Alex Eppard had two assists and Conner Werner had a goal while Mateo Maughlin dished out an assist.

 

In the cage, senior Nemo Lesesane had seven stops for the Patriots.

 

Thomas Murphy led Freeman with three goals while Andrew Ryan had two goals and two assists.

 

 

Orange baseball blows past Madison

 

Orange County’s baseball team beat Madison County 11-1 at home Tuesday night to open the season with a victory, led by an impressive offensive performance.

 

Tre Smith and Christian Boswell each had three RBI on the night, with Smith going 3-for-4 at the plate for the Hornets. Dalton Jone was also solid with a 2-for-3 outing that included a pair of RBI. The Hornets took advantage of six Madison errors to score their 11 runs.

 

Caleb Clenney threw the five inning shutout, striking out six while scattering four hits and two walks.

 

Shane Aylor went 2-for-2 at the plate and scored the Mountaineers’ lone run.

 

Western softball falls to Amherst

 

The Western Albemarle softball team dropped a 5-0 home game to Amherst Tuesday. A double from Olivia Markopoulos broke up a no-hit bid by the Lancers.

 

Kara Madison and Jenny Bellings combined for five strikeouts in the circle for the Warriors.

 

Western will take on Covenant at 5 p.m. Thursday at home.

 

Other scores

 

Covenant baseball shut out Roanoke Catholic 7-0 Tuesday night. The Eagles used five pitchers in the win, with Jacob Haney, Matt Shobe, Tyler Mahone and Will Moore combining for the shutout. The quartet struck out 12 and didn’t surrender any walks. Haney led the Covenant offense with three hits while Mahone had two. Freshman David Martin connected on his first high school hit.

 

Covenant boys tennis beat Steward 8-1. Madison and Orange girls soccer tied 3-3. Orange boys soccer beat Madison 4-0. Louisa baseball fell 4-3 to Patrick Henry-Ashland while the Lions’ softball squad dropped a 5-4 contest with the Patriots. Spotswood boys soccer beat Monticello 3-1
