Spring Roundup 3.14.16: Albemarle girls soccer, CHS boys soccer and Covenant baseball get wins

Albemarle girls soccer came out swinging in the Patriots’ season opener and knocked off a tough Atlee squad 3-1 Monday night.

 

The Raiders are one of the new additions to Conference 16 along with Patrick Henry-Roanoke.

 

“It was nice to see them early on, we’ll definitely be seeing them at the end of this season,” said Albemarle coach Amy Sherrill. “That’s a nice way to start the season, and we’ll take (the win).”

 

Hannah Eiden scored two goals for the Patriots while Leticia Frietas finished had the game-winner in between. Eiden assisted Frietas on her goal while Sunny Gelnovatch and Katie Schnell each had an assist.

 

The Patriots unleashed a barrage of 20 shots on goal, while Albemarle withstood 10 shots from the Raiders, with Albemarle eeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper making saves on nine of them.

 

Albemarle gets a week off before taking on Mountain View on the road next Tuesday.

 

Charlottesville boys shut out Louisa

 

The Charlottesville boys soccer team is working out some kinks, but the Black Knights rolled to a solid season-opening win with a 5-0 victory over Louisa Monday night.

 

“We’ve only got three seniors and we’re working hard,” said CHS coach Stephan Cost. “We’ve got a bunch of new faces so we’ll see how this season progresses. We’re still a little shaky here and there but we’re working on that stuff.”

 

Campbell Brickhouse scored a pair of goals and notched an assist. Evan Blow, Pau Park and Thomas Inigo each scored. Theo Heard and Alex Pfister each finished with two assists.

 

The Black Knights were up 3-0 at halftime.

 

Charlottesville now heads into a big-time early season matchup against Albemarle High on Wednesday night at Charlottesville.

 

Covenant baseball blows past Charlottesville

 

Covenant’s baseball team picked up a win Monday night, beating Charlottesville 20-1.

 

Trent Miller combined on the mound to hold the Black Knights to just three hits in the five-inning effort.

 

The victory starts off a busy week for the Eagles as they play Tuesday and then play a pair of games on Saturday.
