Spring Girls Roundup 3.26.15: Albemarle girls tennis beats Fluvanna, Albemarle girls soccer tied MVHS

Albemarle’s girls tennis team finally got their season underway Wednesday with a road match against Fluvanna Wednesday. A re-worked lineup with some new faces carried the day for the Patriots as they rolled 9-0 past the Flucos.

The freshmen tandem of Beth Shafer and Grace Barrett-Johnson both looked sharp and cruised to 10-2 and 10-0 victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds to set the tone. Senior Gaby Balcells also made quick work of her opponent with a 10-1 win at No. 6.

“It’s nice to finally get out on the court and swing the racquet,” said Albemarle coach Rich Lindsay. “Now we’ve got something to build off of and we’ll take what we learned and adjust from there.”

Doubles was much the same with Balcells and Margaux Hapgood got the 10-0 win at No. 3 for the Pats and Shafer and Madeline Bruggeman paired up for a 10-3 win at the No. 2 seed. Just as in singles the top spot was a more closely contested affair with Fluvanna’s Stribling and Kirby falling to Maddie Williamson and Leah Lord 10-7.

Albemarle hits the road Friday again to take on Monticello at 5 p.m.
