Spring Boys Roundup 4.16.15: Western tennis, Orange baseball pickup wins

Western Albemarle and Albemarle boys tennis is almost always a marquee matchup in spring, and the teams’ first clash lived up to the usual hype with Western edging out a 5-4 victory over the Patriots.

The Warriors’ doubles teams of Daniel Thomas and Patrick Hicks as well as Andrew Ern and Ben Masselli won big to put Western over the top. Ern and Masselli rolled 10-0 while Thomas and Hicks won 10-1.

The teams entered doubles with split in singles.

Albemarle (4-1) hosts Orange County Thursday at 5 p.m. while the Warriors (5-0) travel to take on Charlottesville Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Orange County baseball edges Powhatan

Orange County’s baseball team picked up a huge win Wednesday night, edging Powhatan 4-3 at home.

The Hornets scored four runs despite only putting together four hits against the Indians, with Bradley Hanner’s 2-RBI night leading the way. Dalton Jobe, Kaleb Marshall and William Yager notched hits as well. Orange scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead, then held Powhatan to just two runs in the fifth and held on to the one-run advantage from there.

Hanner threw a complete game for the Hornets and scattered seven hits and struck out nine in the effort.

Hunter Langston threw four innings for the Indians and didn’t give up a single earned run while striking out four and surrendering just two hits. Powhatan committed five errors as a team in the loss.

Fork Union baseball falls to St. Christopher’s

Fork Union’s baseball team couldn’t scratch together any timely hit and dropped its second Prep League contest to St. Christopher’s 4-0.

Cody Valenzuela threw 4.2 innings for St. Christopher’s to pick up the win and also went 2-for-3 with a double at the plate. Ryan Hansen exploded for the Saints at the plate with a double and 2 RBI while going 3-for-3.

Julius Puryear went 2-for-3 for the Blue Devils while Jacob Grabeel threw 5.2 innings on the mound. The loss drops Fork Union to 10-4 overall and 2-2 in the Prep League. St. Chris is 6-4-1 and 4-3 in Prep League play.
