Spotswood girls top Monroe

Spotswood’s girls basketball team made short work Wednesday night of William Monroe, rolling 48-21 in the second round of the Daily Progress Holiday Basketball Classic.

The win gave the Blazers yet another berth in the tournament’s championship game. Spotswood has won the title the last three years running.

Bailey Williams poured in 16 points, with 14 coming before the break.

Elizabeth Duffelmeyer chipped in 12 while Taylor Dodson finished with 10. The balanced scoring effort combined with hard-nosed defense spurred Spotswood to the win.

Monroe didn’t have a single scorer in double figures, as Arica Brown led the Dragons with seven total points. Spotswood managed to hold Alex Cave, Alexa Smith, Summer Tarpley and Tiffany Snead to eight points total.

Monroe will face Charlottesville tomorrow in the tournament’s third place game while Spotswood will battle Miller for the title.
