Scot, Preve, Nelson pick up Region II titles

NOKESVILLE — Western Albemarle tennis players Alex Preve, Teddy Nelson and Cam Scot will all have busy schedules next week down in Southwest Virginia this week.

The trio wrapped up their second Region II title within the week with Preve and Nelson combining for the doubles title and Scot, just a sophomore, winning the singles title. The Warriors took the team title Saturday at home against Sherando.

Scot bounced back from a loss to Sherando’s Caleb Nguyen Saturday in the team event to roll into the region finals and earn a rematch with Nguyen. The match was a mirror image of the tandem’s Saturday match when Scot won the first set before Nguyen won two in a row to pick up the win. This time Nguyen got the upper hand with a 6-1 win, but Scot responded with two 6-2 set wins to grab the region title and his first career berth in the Group AA semifinals June 10 at Radford.

Preve and Nelson faced an even more familiar foe in their doubles final after gutting out a tough three-set win over Sherando’s Trey Scot and Nguyen in the semifinals, where Preve had to serve a perfect game at 5-4 in the third to clinch the match. Western’s pair locked up with Jefferson District rival Monticello High’s Colin Rowe and Luke Nadkarni in the final, who rolled over Broad run 6-3, 6-0 to get their shot against Preve and Nelson.

The Warriors’ standouts ran out to a 6-3, 6-3 win, capping three straight wins on the season against the Rowe/Nadkarni pairing.
