Pair of Schnell goals lift Albemarle girls soccer

That’s how you make a statement.

In her first game of the season, Albemarle sophomore Meghan Schnell — a new addition at forward for the Patriots — exploded for a pair of goals in a 2-0 victory for Albemarle over Colonial Forge in Albemarle’s season opener on the road.

Schnell’s two goals prove that an already deep Albemarle roster should get a boost from a talented  influx of young players and be primed to make a run at defending the squad’s 2011 Commonwealth title.

In her first action in net as the starter while taking over for Betsy Haugh who graduated and now plays for Marshall University, senior Emily Leytham was rock solid, coming up with 13 saves on Colonial Forge’s 13 shots on goal.

A new look midfield for the Patriots played admirably as well, with Maggie Tubridy, Abby Mathis and Lauren Truwit leading the way.

Albemarle moves to 1-0 on the year, and will take on Riverbend Thursday night at home.
