Orange girls slip past Madison

Behind a big third quarter and a balanced offense, Orange County was able to take down Madison County in the second meeting between the two out-of-district rivals this season, 47-42.

Going into the second half, the Hornets trailed the Mountaineers by five but put together the run it needed to get out in front. Orange outscored Madison 15-4 in the frame led by five points from Rebecca Harvey, but getting six different players in the scoring book during the stretch.

In the fourth the Hornets were able to hang on with the Mountaineers trying to surge back. Orange hit 12 of its 14 free throws in the final quarter to offset the scoring run on the other end of the court from Madison’s Chandler Gentry, Timberly Deane and Abby Erb.

For the Hornets, four different players had seven or more points including forward Markiana Smith who led the with 12 points, six of those coming in the fourth quarter. Ashleigh Williams had 10 points and hit all eight of her foul shots. Harvey finished with nine points and Kiani Hudgens added seven.

Gentry tied Smith with a game high 12 points. Erb added eight points. Bria Johnosn had seven points, all of them coming in the second quarter to help give Madison the lead going into the break.

Madison travels to Manassas Park on Wednesday a 7:30 p.m.

Orange hosts North Stafford on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
