Orange boys soccer hands Western first loss

It’s been a crazy few weeks in the Jefferson District boys soccer standings. Since Western Albemarle and Fluvanna County tied more than two weeks ago, the two schools have been jockeying back and forth at the top of the standings. On Tuesday night, Orange County helped to shake up the standings again as they handed the Warriors their first loss of the year, 2-1.

Western drew first blood off of a goal from freshman Hayes Fountain, but the Hornets struck back just before the end of the first half when Josh Pugh found the back of the net.

In his first year with the Hornets, Eric Wilkening put his team out in front, and although Western managed to outshoot Orange 15-8, Hunter Ferguson stood tall in net to preserve the win with a 10 save outing.

The Hornets win gave Fluvanna the regular season title and one of the two possibile Region II births.

Both Orange and Western will be back in action on Friday in the JD quarterfinals.
