Monticello softball rallies past AHS

Monticello softball was trailing by two runs going into the final frame Monday night. They needed some kind of spark against a tough Albemarle team if the Mustangs were going to pick up their second win of the season.

They got that spark in the form of a handful of Albemarle errors, some opportunistic base-running and a walk-off single by Taylor Mullins that plated Mattie Morris for the game-winning run, locking up a 5-4 win over AHS.

The Patriots’ late inning struggles stuck Emily McAllister with a loss despite only surrendering one earned run and striking out six. It also erased a pair of strong hitting nights by Katie Taylor (2 for 4 with an RBI) and Haley Brown (3 for 3 with an RBI).

Kayley Norford picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs. Morris led Monticello with a pair of hits and an RBI. Norford, Heather Morris and Ruby Garofolo all had an RBI each in a balanced offensive effort.

The Mustangs will try and build on the momentum when they hit the road Thursday to take on Orange County while Albemarle will host Louisa County Friday night.
