Monticello girls outscore Powhatan

Molly Shepherd isn’t messing around apparently.

Proving that her 23-point outing against Fluvanna last week was no flash in the pan, the standout sophomore unleashed a 27-point night in a wild 76-62 victory over defending Jefferson District champion Powhatan. The win set up a clash of unbeaten Jefferson District foes Friday when Western Albemarle and the Mustangs meet up.

“It’s a huge one — we had to have this one at home,” said Monticello coach Josh McElheney. “That makes Friday that much bigger.”

Containing the suddenly red-hot Shepherd in the post will be job one for the Warriors. Shepherd’s big night opened things up for Bridget Holleran who notched 13 points and Meghan Comer who finished with 11 points.

The Mustangs led 27-19 at the end of the first but Powhatan bounced back to take a narrow 40-38 lead at the break. The up-and-down pace continued from there as both squads kept piling up points. Monticello gained an advantage with a 22-9 edge in the third and then held on from there.

Powhatan’s Tamesha Morris finished with 27 points in the loss for the Indians.

The Warriors and Mustangs will lock up Friday at 7:30 p.m.
