Monticello girls lacrosse’s defense lifts Mustangs past Rockbridge

Monticello’s girls lacrosse squad has featured an explosive offense over the past few seasons, but Thursday night the offense sputtered a bit.

Lucky for the Mustangs, the defense was up to the task. Behind that stout unit, Monticello edged out Rockbridge for a 7-4 victory to move to 2-0 on the season.

“Our goalie Anna Brown had a phenomenal game, she obviously carried us on defense,” said coach Karen Redd.

Brown was solid with seven saves in just her second career start. The sophomore took over in the cage this year with the graduation of Taylor Paige.

In front of Brown, Libby Firer, Bridget Holleran, Georgia Proutt and Madison Combs stood tall on defense, with Monticello holding a decisive 45-25 advantage on ground balls.

“(Brown’s) saves are a tribute to their hard work as well,” Redd said. “Our defense definitely held up the strong end on that one.”

The Mustangs got a solid effort from Sydney Larese on the offensive end as the junior poured in four goals and notched an assist. Arianna Slate finished with two goals while Caroline MacDonald, Schuyler Thornton and Madison Combs chipped in assists. McDonald had a goal to round out the scoring.

“We’re going to learn from this game, we’ve got a lot to work on,” Redd said. “It’s just fine-tuning the basics and working harder.”
