Louisa sweeps home track meet

Louisa County’s track program picked up a pair victories in a regular season track meet when the Lions hosted Western Albemarle, Charlottesville and Goochland Wednesday. But a couple of individual performances in the jumps by Louisa’s Javanique Burruss and Charlottesville’s David Johnson that would have won the Group AA title last season highlighted the day.

The Lions piled up 131 points to outpace Western in the men’s rankings and had 133 points in the girls bracket to also outpace the second place Warriors.

Burruss ripped off a long jump of 18 feet and 10 inches, five inches longer than the leap that won her the long jump’s Group AA meet in 2010. Burruss won the triple jump too with a 35-05 and also clocked a 16.43 to win the 100-hurdles.

Corrinn Harris edged out Charlottesville’s David Johnson in the boys long jump, with a winning jump of 21 feet and 10 inches. The tandem switched places in the triple jump as Johnson posted a season-high of 47-11, a leap that would’ve easily won the Group AA state title in 2010. Johnson finished second that year in the event.

Tony Green clocked a 40.72 in the 300 hurdles for his top time of the season and Harris was right on his heels. Monica Mallory won the 100-meter dash and 200-meter fash for the Lions’ girls squad.

Kelsey Grupp won the girls pole vault for the Warriors while Robbie Davis picked up the boys side victory for Louisa. Western sophomore Maggie Kooken won the discus with a toss of 99-09. Kooken also finished second in the shot with a 34-02 throw with Valerie Washington of Charlottesville winning the event. Matt Haller won the boys discus for Goochland with a toss of 132-01. Jerome Jordan took the boys shot, throwing 45-08 while Andre Mealy of Louisa took second place.
