Louisa County track sweeps Jefferson District titles

Louisa County swept the Jefferson District track and field championships on April 27, with the Louisa girls outpacing Fluvanna County by 10 points while the Louisa boys coasted to a win by nearly 70 points.

The Louisa girls got a big boost from Kiana Richardson, who won both the 100 and 200-meter championships. Amari Quarles won the 400-meter race for the Lions by a little less than three seconds. Noel Jackowicz won the 300-hurdles for Louisa. Brandy Brown and Aaliyah Clark went one-two in the long jump.

Fluvanna’s Matasha Martin finished as the runner-up in the 100-meter, ran the anchor leg of the second place 4×100 team and took seventh in the high jump. Autumn Shepherd and LaMaya Lacy went one-two in the 100-hurdles. Shepherd also took third in the long jump. The Flucos picked up a lot of points in the discus by placing second, third, fourth and fifth with Renee Custer’s runner-up finish leading the way.

Western Albemarle’s Zoe Clay pulled off a double victory, winning the 800 and 160-meter races, with teammate Averi Witt coming in second in the 1600. Lydia Gardner won the high jump for Western while Sarah Tolman won the pole vault with VCU-bound Katrina Barredo taking the runner-up slot. Western’s 4×800 team picked up the relay win for the Warriors.

Monticello’s Laura Habermeyer won the 3200-meter race. Albemarle’s 4×100 and 4×400 teams each won district titles. Charlottesville’s Emonta Burnley won the triple jump. Orange’s Jasmine Tompskins took home the girls shotput title. Powhatan’s Selina Sakrisson won the discus.

JD Boys championships

The Louisa boys’ huge win was even more impressive because only a handful of Louisa athletes won individual titles. Ricky Langhorne doubled in the 110 and 300 hurdles with teammates both taking second in those races (Jordan Cherry in the 100, Jacob Woodson in the 300).  Langhorne also took third in the long jump and second in the triple jump. Louisa got a title from its 4×800 squad while Woodson won the pole vault. The Lions’ depth took over from there, like in the triple jump where they took third and fourth behind Langhorne and in the relays where they finished second behind Albemarle in the 4×100 and 4×400.

Charlottesville finished second as a team, with Jaron White and Tariq Carrington’s performances in the sprints setting the tone. Carrington won the 100 while White took second and they reversed spots in the 200 as White took home the title. Carrington also won the high jump and took second in the long jump.

Albemarle’s Ben Gersbach won the 800 with teammate Zach Mackenzie taking second. The Patriots’ 4×100 squad won a district title as did the 4×400 squad. Khalid Turay won the long jump for the Patriots.

Western’s Trevor Stutzman, Jack Ehlenberger and Davis Green took first, second and third in the 1600-meter race and Stutzman also took home the 3200-meter title for a particularly strong day. Max Feuerlein and Carter Megahan of Western finished second and third in the 3200.

For Orange, Dequane Simmons won the 400-meters.

Powhatan’s Will Schwartz won the shot put and was runner-up in the discus while Fluvanna’s Zach Hartzog won the discus.
