Local schools notch big outings at 2015 VISAA swim championships

While Trinity Episcopal’s boys swim team ran away with the title with 293 points Saturday in the VISAA Championships, several local squads had monster showings at the state meet.

Woodberry’s boys squad placed third overall, edging Fork Union’s fourth place finish by just a point. The Tigers rode the strength of three top-eight relays including the third place 400-free relay to the third place performance. Nick Switzer finished second in the 200-IM and grabbed fourth in the 100-breast while Quintin Schwartz finished seventh I the dive and Chas Sigloh took fifth in the 100-fly and sixth in the 100-back.

For Fork Union, a second place finish in the 200-free relay, a fourth in the 400-free relay and some strong individual performances pushed the Blue Devils into fourth. Nathaniel Bennet netted two top four finishes with a third in the 50-free and a fourth in the 100-fly. Samer Khalil took seventh in the 100-fly while Mohammed Hassanin took seventh in the 100-free. Bethea Brindley finished fourth in diving while Stewart Mancano took sixth.

STAB’s Bryan Hynes had a monster individual outing with runner-up finishes in the 100-fly and 500-free while Matt McHugh took sixth in the 100-free. The Saints finished 11th as a team in large part due to those performances.

Covenant had a solid day, with Ben Holstege in particular stepping up for the Eagles while helping push them to 13th place overall. Holstege finished sixth in the 50-free and third in the 100-back. The Eagles also notched a pair of 10th place relay finishes in the 200-medley and 200-free relay, strong performances in a field packed with schools bigger than Covenant.

On the girls side, STAB’s Alyssa Gonnella took second in dive as just an eighth grader while Covenant’s Mackenzie Lawson finished seventh in the 100-breast.
