JD girls: Monticello clinches title, Western wins

Monticello’s girls basketball squad took care of some unfinished business Tuesday night, winning a Jefferson District regular season crown for the first time in school history as the Mustangs continued an unbeaten run through the JD with a 52-42 win over Charlottesville.

“That was one of our goals this year—that’s one thing we didn’t get last year,” said Monticello coach Josh McElheney. “They came out and played hard—Charlottesville gave us a good game. Nothing came easy, especially in that first half, but we buckled down in the second half and made some shots.”

Molly Shepherd led the Mustangs with a 16-point outing, doing the bulk of her damage in the fourth quarter where she finished with eight points. Meghan Comer and Bridget Holleran each finished with 11 points while Reagan Roberts chipped in eight on the night.

Kendall Ballard finished with 12 points to lead Charlottesville while River Frazier put together an 11-point night.

Western girls roll past Powhatan

Bridget Shaffrey only had four points against Powhatan Tuesday night, but the Western Albemarle senior dominated the glass with 15 rebounds to help spark the Warriors to a 48-31 victory over Powhatan at home.

Anna Sumpter’s 13 points and three 3-pointers from Kathryn Crickenberger ignited an offense that built a 17-4 lead coming out of the gate in the first quarter.

The Warriors will host Charlottesville to close out the regular season Wednesday night.
