William Monroe girls fall to Turner Ashby in Holiday title game

For three and a half quarters, William Monroe’s girls basketball team gave 2014 Group 3A state champion Turner Ashby all the Knights could handle.

But in the final stages of the fourth quarter, TA took control and pulled away from the Dragons as William Monroe fell 66-53. Kierstin Roadcap led the way in that fourth quarter assault, scoring 20 of her 31 total points in the fourth, including a 12-for-14 performance at the free throw line in that frame.

The Dragons and Knights were tied at 43-43 with a little more than four minutes to play, but Monroe ran out of steam down the stretch after three straight days of basketball. Sam Brunelle finished with 30 points on the night, going 10-for-13 at the line. Dajour Strother had 10 points for the Dragons and Makayla Morris had six points.

The Dragons won’t get much rest, as they travel to George Mason Wednesday night in a key Bull Run District clash.
