Holiday hoops roundup: Orange girls win, Western boys fall

Western boys fall to Sherando

Despite a big-time night beyond the arc from Eli Sumpter and a 17-for-19 outing at the free-throw line, Western Albemarle’s boys fell 68-64 to Sherando in the Daily Progress/NBC29 Holiday Classic’s first round Thursday.

The Warriors trailed by two at 64-62 with a minute to play but could never crack that margin, though they had a chance after Sherando missed a pair of free throws with 17.6 seconds left. Western couldn’t convert though and after two made free throws the game was out of reach for the Warriors.

Western hung tough with the senior-laden, 2011-2012 Northwestern District runner-up Sherando despite Chase Stokes having one of his slower games with seven points as he continues to draw a lot of defensive attention. Sumpter helped out with 18 points, including four 3-pointers on the night. Sam Chisholm also had a big night underneath with 16 points. He was 6-for-6 from the line too. Jake Maynard had nine points total.

Aaron Miller led Sherando with 17 points. Taylor Loudon had 14 points too, going 8-for-13 at the charity stripe. Demontay Harrison notched 10 points to round out Sherando’s double digit scorers.

Orange girls top Spotsylvania

Coming off the squad’s second victory in Commonwealth District play Orange County’s young girls basketball squad seems to have some new confidence—and a fourth win to show for it.

The Hornets rolled 49-25 past Spotsylvania Thursday and will now face off against Fluvanna Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Orange got a pair of double digit games from junior Ashleigh Williams (11 points) and sophomore Markiana Smith (12 points) but beyond that the scoring was balanced with three players notching five or more points.

Defensively the Hornets locked down Spotsylvania, holding Appalachian State-bound  Bria Carter to just 10 points.
