Hearn sets single game total yards mark

It turns out maybe the team scoring wasn’t the only record-setting mark Friday night in Western Albemarle’s wild clash with Staunton River.

We already know that Western Albemarle’s 85-79 loss to Staunton River finished second all-time in the VHSL record books for most points in one game scored by two teams with 164 total points. It’s the highest ever between two VHSL squads as the top game ever was Kingsport, Tenn. beating Norton 193-0 in 1925. Either way you slice it, it’s the highest in regulation ever since 1925.

But after some further examination and a couple of folks chiming in via Twitter and email, it appears Western quarterback Sam Hearn has set some marks of his own.

Hearn’s 665 total yards (a record kept by the VHSL that combines passing, receiving and rushing yards), is the most in a single game all-time. It’s by a wide margin too as the old record was Jim Hogan’s 636 yards in 1966. Hogan threw for all 636 of his while Hearn rushed for 96 and threw for 569.

His 569 passing yards are the second most ever in a single game, finishing behind Hogan’s mark and ahead of Brad Robbins’ 556 for Powell Valley against Clintwood in 2004.

Hearn also tied the single game mark for touchdown responsibility, a mark that combines passing, rushing, receiving and return scores into one lump sum. Hearn threw for five touchdowns and rushed for four more. That’s nine in touchdown responsibility, tying Hogan back on that day in 1966 (all through the air), Central-Woodstock’s Randy Walker’s nine in 1969 and Gretna’s Nick Miller nine in 2007.
