Fluvanna’s Harlowe-Garrett named Mideast coach of the year

Fluvanna County’s Christi Harlowe-Garrett has coached some tremendous teams and built a strong volleyball culture during her tenure as the head coach for the Flucos.

This week the National Federation of State High School Associations recognized that work by naming Harlowe-Garrett the 2015 Mideast Section coach of the year. To be eligible for that award, Harlowe-Garrett was already named the coach of the year in Virginia. The Mideast section is made up of Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. Winning the mideast nod made Harlowe-Garrett one of eight finalists for national volleyball coach of the year.

While this year was more of a rebuilding season for the Flucos, Harlowe-Garett piloted Fluvanna to a particularly fine 2014 when the squad won a Conference 23 title before falling in the region quarterfinals in a tough 3-1 battle.

The Flucos were led that year by current UNCW player Maddie Kline, Leslie Walters and Kate Stutz. Stutz was one of the few returners who’d played a lot of matches going into this season when the Flucos fell in the semifinals of the Conference 29 tournament to Monticello.
