On a night where the heat was just brutal, Goochland and Essex played to a stalemate for three quarters, with both squads’ defenses rising to the occasion.
In the fourth quarter though, Goochland’s defense took things to another level, snagging a pair of interceptions and returning them for touchdowns en route to a 14-0 victory.
John King snagged the first one for the Bulldogs, picking off a pass and sprinting in from 23 yards out. A few minutes later, Cordell Mattox all but put the game away when the senior picked another pass off and raced 96 yards for a touchdown.
Goochland will take on Fork Union Military Academy next week in another challenging out-of-district game.
