FUMA, Woodberry track squads place in VISAA’s top three

Liberty Christian Academy may have won the title at Saturday’s VISAA outdoor track and field championships, but two Central Virginia private schools had pretty solid days as well.

Fork Union Military Academy took second place while Woodberry Forest came in third in the state-wide meet and produced a few individual champions along the way.

Fork Union got titles out of Michael Idziak won the 800-meter dash, the school’s 4×100 squad and Jordan Roach’s dominant win in the discus with a throw that was 32-feet longer than the next closet competitor.

Kevin Bennert won the 3200-meters for the Tigers’ lone title, but a slew of top-three finishes spurred Woodberry to the third overall spot. C.J. Prosise, who last week earned Prep League athlete of the meet honors, finished second to Virginia Tech football and track signee Demitri Knowles in the 100-meters. Knowles posted a 10.68 in the race, while Prosise checked in with a blazing 10.99. FUMA’s Andre Parker wasn’t far behind Prosise with an 11.01 posting in third.

Parker finished second in shotput, losing by less than three inches.

Knowles also won the 200, with Parker taking fourth, FUMA’s D.J. Randle El in seventh and Prosise in eighth.

The 1600 meters was a thriller, with Episcopal’s Reid Nickle edging Bennert by less than three tenths of a second. FUMA’s Avery Martin took third while Miller’s Elias Hubbard, a member of the schools’ endurance team, picked up a seventh place finish.

Wright grabbed second in the 110-meter hurdles while Woodberry’s Pierre Courpon took third. In other hurdles action, Richard Quittenton took third in the 300-hurldes for FUMA.

Jonathan Yellets posted a second place in the 400 while Tyron McDade grabeed third for the Blue Devils in the high jump.

While the FUMA 4×100 squad won a relay title, the Blue Devils’ 4×400 and 4×800 teams each took fourth. Woodberry’s 4×400 team managed a second place in the event.

FUMA’s Staton Mayfield took third in pole vault  by clearing 13 feet even while his brother Rains took seventh and Harris Coley placed fourth for Woodberry.

Wallace Branch took third in triple jump for Woodberry while Obiero Okeyo and Keanan Verna grabbed third and fourth for FUMA.

This is only the second season in the last 25 years that Fork Union hasn’t won the state title.
