Four teams hit field for state quarterfinals Tuesday

Five teams are alive in Central Virginia. Just five.

Four will have to win Tuesday night to survive, and two have a long, arduous trip to make before they take the field.

Western Albemarle’s boys tennis team will get to wait until Thursday before participating in the singles, doubles and team state semifinals at the VHSL’s Group AA Jubilee. But Monticello’s softball team, Nelson County’s boys soccer team, Western Albemarle’s girls lacrosse team and Madison County’s girls soccer team will put their seasons on the line in the state quarterfinals tonight.

Nelson and Madison, interestingly, both hit the road for the Eastern Shore, traveling nearly four hours to face Northampton High, the Group A, Region A champions in girls and boys soccer. Western Albemarle’s girls lacrosse team heads north to Westfield High for a 6 p.m. game against Langley in the state semifinals.

Monticello, the Region II champion, is the lone school that gets to stay at home in this round, hosting Region I runner-up Poquoson Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

Edited to add in Western Albemarle girls lacrosse (11:14 p.m.). We regret the omission.
