Fork Union basketball surges past Trinity Episcopal

Fork Union’s boys basketball team stormed back from a 15-point deficit to beat Trinity Episcopal 75-62 Tuesday night, giving the Blue Devils a solid win over the No. 7 team in VISAA’s Division I as FUMA tries to claw its way into the playoffs.

Adisa Gittens-Smith jumpstarted the 18-2 run that got the Blue Devils back ahead of the Titans with Fork Union scoring 31 points in the third quarter. He scored six points during the run as part of his team-high 18 points on the night while also chipping in four steals and six rebounds.

Fork Union had four other players in double figures, with Detwon Shelton posting a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Josh Nevers nearly getting there with 10 points and eight rebounds. Carl Trice finished with 16 points and six assists and Stanley White notched 15 points.

The Blue Devils (7-13, 3-8 Prep League) forced the Titans into a tough shooting night beyond the arc as Trinity went just 1-for-20 from the 3-point line. Meanwhile, Fork Union did a lot of damage at the free throw line where they went 25-for-39.

Fork Union also scored 15 points off of turnovers. The Blue Devils play Christchurch on the road Friday at 6:30 p.m. The win against Trinity sealed the No. 6 spot in the Prep League tournament for the Blue Devils and they’re currently still in the mix for one of the last couple of spots in the 12-team Division I state tournament.
