CHARLOTTESVILLE — Fluvanna didn’t score until the second half but the Flucos scored often in it, beating Monticello 4-0 Monday night.
The two teams played a scoreless first half with Fluvanna managing two shots on goal to Monticello’s one. Neither team had any strong offensive chances.
“I wasn’t happy in the first half because we were too direct, we just tried to dump everything over the top. I told the guys try not to do that as much, work it around. Things started clicking for us,” said FCHS head coach Earl Gibson.
The second Fluco corner kick in the second half, bounced off Cristian Franco’s head right to Quinn Johnson who found the back of the net through the crowd. Then Dale Ludwig dribbled through the MHS defense to score in the 60th minute. Ludwig scored again off a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.
Fluvanna’s final goal was a Franco shot from Hunter Deforge in the 68th minute.
“They got a goal, then they got another goal. Then it started falling apart,” said MHS head coach Adam Southall.
The Mustang offense couldn’t get anything going, managing just three shots on goal the entire match. Most opportunities were spoiled by the FCHS defense before anything could develop. MHS didn’t take a corner kick the entire game.
“We’ve hadn’t had a solid lineup this whole season due to injury, that’s the first time we’ve had a collective group [on defense] and I’m really statisfied with what their doing back there [tonight],” said Gibson.
Southall said, “We seem to play a lot in the middle and they seem to cater to that. There was a lot of possession in the middle of the field, we did not find the width on either side. As a result, we couldn’t spread our transition out and we ran right into their center mids over and over again.”
Monticello falls to 1-2 in the Jefferson District while the Flucos improve to 2-1. MHS next travels to Louisa on April 25. FCHS hosts district frontrunner Western Albemarle on the same day.
