Flucos top Mustangs in boys soccer

The Fluvanna County boys soccer team racked up another win, defeating Monticello 2-0 Monday night.

The game began as a defensive struggle, familiar to the Flucos as they returned from their second tie of the season, a scoreless double overtime matchup against Western last week.

With nine minutes left in the first half, Fluvanna’s Jake Domenic took a free kick from about half field, which flew towards the goal and bounced in untouched.

“We had a really slow start,” said Domenic. “I think the first goal gave us some momentum to draw from.”

The Flucos carried a scarce amount of that momentum into the second half, as the score remained at 1-0 until the 64th minute. After Fluvanna’s Taylor Rafaly made a drive towards Monticello goal keeper Milton Ortiz, his shot was deflected within reach providing him with a second opportunity to score.

Rafaly connected, securing the 2-0 victory. Fluvanna goal keeper Nick Greco recorded six saves in the shutout, and the Flucos took a total of 12 shots in the contest. The Mustangs recorded seven shots as a team.

Fluvanna (9-0-2, 7-0-2 Jefferson) will travel to William Monroe on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Monticello (6-5, 6-4) will play at Goochland on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
