Covenant, Woodberry take third at VISAA golf championships

Thomas Walter carded the lowest score from a Central Virginia player Monday in the VISAA state golf championships and it helped ignite his Woodberry Forest squad to a third place team finish in the event.

And Covenant had a pretty good day too over in Division II.

Walter put together a round of 73 in the Division I final at Sleepy Hole Golf Course in Suffolk, just two shots off a three-way tie for the lead between St. Christopher’s Bryce Chalkley and a pair of Episcopal School standouts, Bailey Patrick and Adam Stowe.

The Division I team scores were determined by the top four finishers for each squad, and Woodberry finished five strokes behind Episcopal, the champion, and St. Christopher’s, the runner-up.

Also in the Division I championship, Blue Ridge’s Chris Hickman put together a round of 77 to earn All-State honors.

Covenant pieced together a 239 team score (based on the top three finishes) to take third place in the tournament. Ben Weaver and Chris Leibl led the Eagles with solid rounds. Weaver put together a 75 to finish fourth behind a trio of 73s by Justin Roberto of Walsingham and Greenbrier Christian’s Preston Leigh and Ashton Newsome. Liebl managed an 80 to earn all-state honors along with Weaver.
