The Covenant girl’s basketball team defeated Tandem Friends 29-22 Tuesday evening in a game where the hustle demonstrated by both teams was overshadowed by the fact that neither team could shoot into the ocean.

After heading into halftime leading 16-14, Covenant made enough shots to stretch its lead to four by the end of the third quarter. Tandem simply struggled to make shots despite have open looks from the perimeter on nearly every possession.

Both teams failed to score from the 7:21-mark in the fourth quarter to 3:28 remaining in the game, before Covenant made a mid-range jumper to extend its lead to 26-18.

“I was really impressed with our team’s effort tonight. It was a tough shooting night. We were able to make the shots we needed to in the end, especially when they switched zones after halftime,” Covenant coach Mike Thornton said.

“We were effective doing things like feeding the ball inside to [Taylor Peed] and driving on the baseline and that helped us score what we needed to in order to win.”

Tandem coach Gordon Fields noted that his team simply failed to make shots, despite having plenty of open opportunities and good execution on offense.

“We’re going through injuries — especially with starters — that left our bench not too deep and our team pretty inexperienced. We’ll just have to work through this and work on situational things in practice, starting tomorrow,” Fields said.

“I thought we played well, and I was impressed with our effort. The shots just didn’t fall tonight.”

Covenant was led by Taylor Peed and Alicia Fox, who scored 10 points and nine points respectively.

Tandem was led by Kate Moody — noticeably inspired on the floor — and Abby Tinsley. who scored seven and eight points respectively.
