Covenant takes second, Blue Ridge fourth in VIC championships

Central Virginia schools had a pretty big impact at the Virginia Independent Conference golf tournament last week.

Covenant and Blue Ridge combined for four of the VIC’s all-conference spots, with the Eagles snagging a team second place finish behind champion Carlisle while the Barons checked in at fourth in the 18-hole championship.

Covenant got all-conference performances from Ben Ryalls and Chris Leibl, who both carded 77s, while Ben Weaver contributed with an 82. Tyler Diduch also hit his way to an 82 while Austin Diduch had an 85 and Kurt Diduch checked in with an 88.

Carlisle’s senior-laden lineup had three players shoot under 80, including a trio of all-VIC performers that scored 71, 69 and 72.

Blue Ridge sophomore Chris Hickman and junior James Weddington put in rounds of 76 and 73 to earn All-VIC nods respectively while Mason Schmidt had an 81 on the night. David Cho, John Cho and Michael Kim rounded out the lineup. Miller School finished 11th with David Middleditch and Leo Zhao leading the way.

Both squads have a couple of regular season tournaments left, while the state tournament looms May 17.
