Covenant slips past Wakefield

Covenant’s not done yet. The Eagles, seeded 10th in the Division II state tournament, knocked off seventh-seeded Wakefield on the road 45-43 largely on the strength of an incredible clutch performance by Gabby Mirabelli.

Mirabelli scored seven of her game high 15 points in the final two minutes to ignite the Eagles past Wakefield in the Division II tourney’s first round. She accounted for seven of the squad’s 11 points in the fourth after the Eagles trailed by three coming into the final frame.

Underneath, Taylor Peed chipped in 10 points, burying five of her six attempts from the field. Rachel Rapp’s 15 rebounds led Covenant as well.

Covenant won’t get long to rest. They head to Norfolk today for a 5 p.m. game in the quarterfinals against No. 2 seed Norfolk Christian, the defending tournament champions.
