Central Virginians sweep top five at golf’s Spostwood Invitational

Western Albemarle’s golf team got off to a solid start with a team victory, but Central Virginia schools as a whole had a rock solid day at the Spotswood Invitational at Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg.

The Warriors won their third straight Spotswood Invite team title, taking first place behind a one-two finish by Landon Weis and Alex O’Dell. Weis notched a 69 on the day, while O’Dell carded a 71. Central Virginians managed to sweep the top five with Albemarle’s Lauren Eklund and Monticello’s Kevin Archer notching finishing in a tie for third with a round of 74 and Albemarle’s Tony Liu taking fifth with a 76.

As a team, Western had rounded out the scoring with Hunter Weis checking in at 81 and Kyle Landis putting together a round of 80 for a grand total of 301, outpacing second place Monticello by five strokes and third place Albemarle by 12.

The Mustangs were actually the lone team with four players under 80, as Carson Wilmer carded a 76, while Michael Comer and Evan Childress also checked in with a 78 each. A fifth Monticello golfer, Austin Yoon, also broke 80 with a 78 of his own, though the score didn’t count toward the team tiotal.

Wilson Desimin and Alex Simmons put together the Patriots’ other two scores that counted toward the team total with Desimini picking up an 82 and Simmons coming up with an 81. Also for Charlottesville, Thaddis Probst put together a round of 83 while Ben Perkins and Casey Devine-Rosser both had 86s.

Charlottesville and Orange County finished seventh and 10th in the tournament. Phillip Hoffman put together Charlottesville’s lowest round with a 79 and teammate Rob Bergland wasn’t far behind with an 81. Orange County’s Brennen Richardson led the way for the Hornets with an 84 while Jake Eheart and John Bosworth both had 89s.
