Buckingham takes James River title with win over Cumberland

Talk about a statement going into the region playoffs.

Buckingham exploded in the first quarter to knock off archrival Cumberland in the James River District final Saturday night. The Knights won 60-53, holding off a fourth quarter spurt by the Dukes.

Taylor Boyers’ incredible performance set the tone for the win as the senior pulled down 22 rebounds to go with 20 points. The Knights don’t seem to have missed a beat despite going from January 26 to February 17 without playing once. They rolled past Randolph-Henry 69-61 in the JRD semifinal.

Tarian Ayers’ 14 points and Harry Eldridge’s 10-point night bolstered the Knights’ offensive effort. Kevin Bolden came up with 12 boards and three blocks to aid Boyers underneath. B.J. Jones had four steals and dished out six assists.

The Knights host Strasburg in the Group A, Region B, Division 2 quarterfinals Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
