Buckingham hangs on against Appomattox

Just a day after falling to Randolph Henry in its James River District opener, Buckingham County shook that loss off and scooped up a big win over Appomattox in a nail-biter, 60-59.

Neither team was able build a significant lead with the score tied after the first frame and the Knights trailing by just a point going into the break.

In the third quarter Buckingham was able to get up by seven points, but had to hold on dearly in the fourth as the Raiders fought back to make it a one possession game as the Knights struggled at the free throw line. But Russ Gowin’s team would not allow another JR defeat in as many days as Buckingham persevered and came out the victors.

Caleb White led the Buckingham offense with his 18 points. Tarian Ayers and Kevin Bolden each flirted with double-doubles. Ayers had 11 points and eight rebounds while Bolden put together 13 points to go with nine boards. Bolden had a trio of blocks while Antonn Briley had a trio of his own — three steals. Both Briley and Ayers had a team high seven assists. The entire Buckingham roster showed patience on defense, committing just nine personal fouls in the game.

The Knights (5-2, 1-1) play their third game in four days when they host Central Lunenberg on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
