Brown scores four in Eagles’ win over Saints

Taylor Brown swears it’s not just her. Her teammates are a huge factor in her season-long scoring spree. But on Tuesday against visiting St. Anne’s-Belfield, she made it awfully hard to argue that she’s not a one woman wrecking crew by scoring four times, and on occasion, making the goal scoring process look nearly effortless during Covenant’s 5-0 victory.

“The reason it might look effortless is because of who I’ve got around me,” Brown said. “Virginia Hill, Kristy Leahong, Maddie Thronton and all kinds of forwards really help me and set up some great shots. It’s not just me out there, it’s everybody.”’

The Eagles jumped on the Saints from the opening whistle, scoring three times in the first half. Brown had two of the goals while Leahong tallied the first score of the game. Though she may be looking to pass the praise to her colleagues, Brown’s second goal of the game drew props from STAB coach Brian Bartholomew.

“(Brown) had some goals out there that really were just outstanding,” Bartholomew said. “Her second goal, that was just a great individual play.”

Covenant made it a tough day for the STAB defense as the Eagles managed to outshoot the Saints 12 to 0. It was a busy day for Cameron Vest in the cage, and the St. Anne’s goalkeeper found a way to make seven saves on the day.

“I thought Cameron played real well,” Bartholomew said. “She had been sick for a couple of weeks and it was great to have her out there again playing hard.”

Right now, the Eagles are rolling and doing it despite the fact that there are only three seniors on the team. For Covenant coach Kate Lavie, having the underclassmen of the team chip in and do a lot of the heavy lifting has been instrumental in her team’s success so far this year.

“For me the biggest thing right now is the younger girls stepping up,” Lavie said. “Having Taylor and some of our freshman or eighth graders on the team out on the field, talking with each other, working with each other, that is really what’s helping us most as a team right now.”

The Eagles (9-2) will host Norfolk Christian on Thursday at 5 p.m.

STAB (2-9) will travel to Trinity on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
