Blundin appointed as new Woodberry Forest athletic director

Matt Blundin will take over as Woodberry Forest’s athletic director. The school announced the decision Wednesday via a press release.

Currently a lead instructional coach in the Albemarle County Public Schools, Blundin takes over for Brian Hemming. His departure was announced in June.

“I am thrilled to welcome Matt Blundin and his family to Woodberry Forest,” said Woodberry headmaster Byron Hulsey in the release. He and his wife, Amy, care deeply about community, and they have served young people in a wide range of settings over many years. Matt’s leadership at Woodberry will challenge all of us to live out the school’s ideals on the athletic fields, in the classroom, and in every area of community life.”

Blundin has coached, taught and worked in a variety of roles in the Charlottesville community since 1999, ranging from being a math teacher and basketball coach at Monticello to his current capacity as ACPS’ lead instructional coach which focuses on professional development of teachers throughout the system. He also volunteers as a youth sports coach in football, basketball, lacrosse and baseball.

At UVa he was a two-sport standout in football and basketball, winning the ACC’s player of the year honors in football as a senior while also earning non-athletic honors including the Dean’s List and a room on The Lawn. He was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.
