Blue Ridge lacrosse holds off Covenant for VIC title

Blue Ridge wrapped up its first ever Virginia Independent Conference lacrosse title Saturday with a 15-9 victory over Covenant in St. George.

Andrew Wilson led the way defensively, anchoring the Barons in goal with 16 saves. He was zoned in completely after Covenant jumped out to a 2-0 lead, clamping down on the Eagles’ skilled offensive unit.

That rock solid performance in the cage opened the door for Blue Ridge’s offense to take control, with Matt Delmonico pouring in three goals and dishing out six assists as the Canadian attackman continued a sterling season for the Barons. Nick Hayes-Watts, another Canadian transplant, ripped off five goals and had an assist.

Michael Carlini and Zak Folks had a pair of goals each, while Khalif Dandy strung together a hat trick. Bubba Delaney triggered Blue Ridge from the midfield with three assists. Blue Ridge shot at a particularly high percentage, connecting on 15 of 22 shots on goal. Covenant held a 30-22 advantage on shots, making Wilson’s stellar work that much more impressive.

Benji Colberg, Miles Davis, Kohls Godine and Alex Kuehler had two goals a piece. Davis had a strong outing, dishing out two assists to go with his goals.
