Basketball roundup 12.15.13: STAB boys pull off shocker

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s boys basketball team served notice Saturday that they could be a factor this season in the Prep League.

A major factor.

The Saints held on to win 61-59 at home over a Christchurch squad led by Florida commitment Devin Robinson, a 6-foot-8 senior power forward who also holds offers from Indiana and Notre Dame, at home Saturday evening.

The Saints pulled the upset behind a monster game from Sam Lorenzo, who finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Javin DeLaurier-Montgomery also had a monster night on the boards with 15 rebounds despite struggling with foul trouble throughout the game. He also had nine points. Kareem Johnson finished with eight points including a pair of 3-pointers and Parker Morris finished with nine points on the night.

STAB sophomore Jalen Harrison had the challenging job of marking Robinson most of the night, and he managed to hold the five-star recruit to just nine points. Harrison also chipped in 10 points and four rebounds.

Two of Christchurch’s other future Division I players, Nick Douglas and Justin Peebles, carried the load for the Seahorses with Robinson struggling to score. Peebles finished with 19 points led by his three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that helped the Seahorses cut into a 16-point STAB lead during the final frame. Douglas finished with 15 points.

STAB will try and keep the momentum going Tuesday when the Saints take on Fork Union on the road.

Temple leads Madison boys past Orange

Matt Temple poured it in from the post for Madison County against rival Orange Saturday night and the Mountaineers picked up a 64-55 victory at home over the Hornets.

Temple finished with 29 points, including 18 in the second half.

Six points from James Graves helped the Mountaineers build an 18-10 lead in the opening frame, but Orange manage to bounce back and cut the lead to just three points at the break. The Hornets couldn’t get any closer though despite 19 points from Kameron Hill, nine of which came in the fourth quarter. Damian Clark finished with 16 while Christian Clore had a 12-point night for the Hornets.

Bobby Ford scored 11 points for the Mountaineers to bolster Temple’s massive output while Dre Twyman had eight for Madison.

Madison next takes the court Tuesday at home against Warren County while Orange hits the road to take on Western Albemarle.

Madison girls edge Orange

With a one-two scoring punch from seniors Chandler Gentry and Maayke Gaunt, Madison’s girls basketball team managed to hold off Orange County 45-43 to snag a Saturday win in the border rivalry.

The Mountaineers were nearly perfect at the free-throw line, finishing 17 of 19 as a team. Gentry was six for six from the charity stripe herself during her 18-point effort while Gaunt was 9 for 9 during her 17-point outing.

Orange charged back from an 8-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter behind a Kiani Hudgens 3-pointer, but shooting just four for eight from the line during that frame played a role in preventing a comeback by the Hornets.

Madison Barber finished with 11 points to lead Orange while Hudgens and Markiana Smith each finished with nine points.

The Hornets will host Western Albemarle Tuesday while Madison travels to Warren County Wednesday.
