Basketball roundup 12.14.13: Fluvanna boys and girls sweep OC, Monticello girls roll

Monticello’s girls got a balanced scoring effort that led to a big first half and a road victory over Western Albemarle Friday night.

Meghan Comer again led the Mustangs with a 17-point effort while Molly Shephard picked up 14 on the night. Cierra Hall had 11 points while Kiana Scott had 10 points.

Western, playing without injured leading scorer Rachel Cooke, struggled offensively. Julia Haws managed a 12-point effort but no one else in the Warriors’ lineup managed to crack into double digits.

The Warriors will try and rebound Tuesday against Orange County while Monticello takes on Fluvanna County.

Fluvanna boys beat Orange

Fluvanna County’s young roster got a big road win Friday night with a veteran move — clutch free throw shooting down the stretch. The Flucos beat Orange County 59-51, hitting 15 of 20 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter.

Julian Bonner led the Flucos with 15 points and hit 9 of 11 free throws in the game, including five for sixth in the fourth quarter. Jameel Wilson checked in with 10 points and went 6 for 7 from the line in the game. Aamir Sims finished with nine points.

Orange couldn’t cut into the lead late with Fluvanna hitting all their shots. Damien Clark set the pace for the Hornets with 15 points, including three 3-pointers on the night. Kameron Hill also got in double figures with 11 points.

The Hornets hit the road to take on Western next week while the Flucos will battle Monticello Tuesday night.

Fluvanna girls drop Orange

Fluvanna County’s girls basketball team picked up a Jefferson District win Friday over Orange County with a 50-33 win sparked by a 19-point first quarter.

The Flucos got 10 points out of Kiana Childress but Fluvanna’s strength was its balance. Dejah Harris had eight points (with all eight coming in the fourth quarter) while Bri Harris and Morgan Symmers had seven points each. Throw in six points each from Chanyan Brown and Katie Stutz (as well as Stutz’s 11 boards) and the Flucos had a solid road victory and some momentum going into a clash with Monticello Tuesday.

Markiana Smith led Orange’s stagnant offense with eight points. The Hornets struggled to get into an offensive groove this week, losing to Monticello Wednesday with an equally rough night from the floor.

Orange will try and bounce back at home against Western Tuesday.
