Basketball roundup 12.29.15

With a spot in the Daily Progress/NBC29 Holiday Classic on the line, Albemarle’s boys basketball team stepped up, beating Turner Ashby 62-47 to advance to the tournament final.

 

The Patriots used a balanced offensive performance to get the job done, with Jake Hahn scoring 17, Austin Katstra 15 and Grant Kersey 12. Hahn and Katstra pulled down seven rebounds each in the winning effort.

 

The Patriots will face George Marshall out of Falls Church in the final Wednesday night.

 

Monroe boys hold on to beat Monticello

 

Monticello’s boys basketball team made a hard charge in the Mustangs’ Holiday Classic consolation bracket matchup Tuesday afternoon, but William Monroe withstood the storm, holding on to beat the Mustangs 52-49.

 

The Dragons’ Anthony Pritchett finished with a team-high 13 points while Anthony Terry and Kamron McCain each had 10 points.

 

Monticello’s Jacoby Jackson led the Mustangs with 12 points while Ukari Brooks and Malik Barbour each had seven.  

Buckingham boys coast past William Campbell

 

Buckingham’s boys basketball team beat William Campbell 54-43 Tuesday night thanks to a stifling defensive effort in the first half and a strong shooting night by senior Leon Ragland.

 

Ragland finished with 21 points and shot 7-for-14 from the field while Tariq Gough had 15 points for the Knights. Ragland also had six rebounds and four steals while Gough chipped in five boards and three steals.

 

Brycen Newby led Buckingham with eight rebounds and a pair of blocks while Michael Allen had seven rebounds and two blocks.

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s girls basketball team rolled past Lake Taylor in the Boo Williams tournament, beating Lake Taylor 75-50 with Ashley Taylor scoring 18 and Mailynn Steppe finishing with 17.

 

William Monroe’s girls basketball team edged Jefferson Forest 48-43 in the semifinals of the Holiday Classic. Sam Brunelle had 20 points, 18 rebounds, seven blocks, three assists and three steals. DaJour Strother had nine points, four rebounds.

 

Charlottesville’s girls basketball team beat Western Albemarle 44-37 in the consolation bracket of the Holiday Classic, with the Black Knights leaning on Destinee McDonald and Alajiah Ragland’s 13 points each to hold off the Warriors. Both teams had a rough offensive start with a 5-5 tie after the first quarter. But Western’s Natalie Marbury finished with 13 points and Julia Haws notched 11 to give the Warriors some offensive life in the final three frames. Western led 15-13 at halftime.
