Albemarle swim teams stay unbeaten

Three meets into the season, Albemarle High’s boys and girls swim teams are already getting rolling, with a double win over Mountain View pushing both Patriots teams to 3-0 on the year.

Albemarle’s boys beat Mountain View 98-72 while the girls picked up a 118-52 victory.

Albemarle’s boys got a solid performance from Chase Robbins, who earned tentative individual region cuts in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle, winning both events. Robbins also swam a leg of the 200-freestyle winner and the second place 400-freestyle relay. The Patriots’ depth took over from there as Albemarle took second, third and fourth in a slew of events that allowed them to gain points each time on Mountain View despite not winning each event. Matt Lockman’s time in the 200 IM, Tim Webb’s time in the 100-back and Robbie Robinson’s time in the 100-breast were among the Patriots’ new regional cuts attained against Mountain View. All three relay teams also made cuts.

On the girls side, the Patriots knocked off the Wildcats in a bit easier fashion, with multiple regional cuts swam by the Harper sisters, Holly and Hannah. The 200-yard medley relay lowered their already region qualifier time and isn’t far off the school record. Hannah Harper set new regional cut times in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle races, winning both events. Holly Harper won set cut times in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke, winning both events by sizeable margins. Along with Corie Morton, Sophia Brown and Mackenzie Jones, Harper also won the 400-yard freestyle relay by more than 18 seconds.

Casey Kyriacopoulos, Albemarle’s senior diver dove after the swim meet wrapped up. She scored a 372.85, qualifying her for the Group AAA state meet.

Albemarle matches up with Riverbend in another Commonwealth District dual this Friday.
