Albemarle leans on run, beats Fluvanna

Albemarle football has the Jefferson District’s best all-time win percentage as of this weekend.

The Patriots bounced back from last week’s frustrating loss to Patrick Henry to roll 35-12 Friday night over Fluvanna County in Albemarle’s first ever Jefferson District opener.

Albemarle’s stingy defense once again led the way, holding Fluvanna to just 161 total yards while keeping the Flucos off the scoredboard for nearly three quarters. Fluvanna finally broke through with a rushing touchdown with 39 seconds left in the third.

The Patriots’ defense even did some scoring of their own when Kevin Bernardino snagged an interception and raced 38 yards for a touchdown with 3:33 to play in the first quarter.

The Patriots leaned heavily on the ground attack, piling up 259 yards on the night for an average of 6.8 yards per carry as a team. Dominique Talley carried the bulk of that load with 142 yards on 19 touches. Kevin McCarty unleashed a 49-yard run in the second quarter for a touchdown while Quordel Carter had 37 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.

Albemarle quarterback D.G. Archer also had a rushing touchdown to go with a touchdown toss to tight end Nick Lawson. Archer went 4 for 9 on the night for 48 yards passing.

Albemarle continues its Jefferson District slate Friday against archrival Western Albemarle.
