Albemarle girls tennis falls to Godwin

Albemarle High’s girls tennis team got an early-season wake-up call Monday when the Patriots lined up against Mills Godwin.

Albemarle fell 7-2 to the four-time defending state champ squad from Richmond. The Patriots expected things to be tough against the Eagles but didn’t roll over. Top seed Megan Napolitano won her singles match against Abigail Randolph 6-2, 6-1 and went on to partner up with Elise Lord in No. 1 doubles for another victory. But those were Albemarle’s lone wins on the night.

At No. 2 doubles Ivy Haines and Summer Caton hung tough in a back and forth match that was stopped due to lightning. Still, Godwin led 6-2 overall and took the win.

“It’s about raising our game,” said No. 5 singles player Maddi McCullough said. “Godwin is still Godwin and showed why they have so many titles. When we keep a level head we can play with them but we’ve still got some work to do.”

The Patriots are still developing their new top six lineup and get a chance to put lessons learned into action tonight as they face Mountain View at home.
