Albemarle girls tennis catches fire in doubles

After a week of spring break, it was evident that Albemarle girls tennis team was perhaps mentally still thinking about relaxing on the beach and the Wildcats of Mountain View were determined to take advantage in a showdown of the Commonwealth district’s two unbeaten squads.

Albemarle held strong however and knocked off Mountain View 6-3 to  move to 6-1 on the season.

The Patriots looked a step slow and showed some rust during singles. Mountain View countered the quick start provided by Albemarle’s Megan Napolitano, Alison Henry and Maddi McCullough, tying up the singles matches 3-3 by winning at No. 2, No. 4  and No. 6 seeds. The Patriots held a rare team huddle after singles as Mountain View clearly got their attention during the opening stretch.

Albemarle re-focused during doubles and it was clear that they were ready to take control. In the end, they claimed the three matches to win 6-3.

“It is good to be tested,” sophomore Callie Murray said. “We’ve come to expect a certain level of excellence from ourselves out there and in some of these matches that has been tough to find.”

Albemarle improves to 6-1 on the season and hosts North Stafford tomorrow at 5 p.m. before a rematch with Mountain View Thursday.
