Albemarle girls lacrosse edges Western in triple-OT

A few weeks after Western Albemarle’s girls lacrosse team took control of the first meeting with Albemarle and outpaced the Patriots by eight goals in a key win, Albemarle responded with an incredible performance Friday night.

The Patriots refused to go away in a see-saw battle that led to three overtimes and a 12-11 win for Albemarle on a Heidi Karweik goal in the third overtime.

The game was tied at 9-9 at the end of regulation with a Julia Hartman goal with 5:04 providing the equalizer. Both defenses clamped down in the closing minutes to force overtime. Albemalre appeared ready to pick up the win in overtime when Rebecca Mendelsohn scored with 1:36 left, but girls lacrosse isn’t sudden death, so the Warriors got a chance to answer and Sammie Magargee came up big with a goal. Kate Snyder then scored the go-ahead goal for the Warriors, putting them up 11-10 after the first half of overtime.

That’s when Albemarle fought back, with Ryann Murray scoring with 1:25 left in that frame to deadlock the game again and send the contest to a third overtime. It appeared headed for a fourth before Karweik broke though and hit the game-winner with 18.1 seconds left to play.

It was Karweik’s third goal of the night, but the Patriots’ scoring was spread among a host of players with Mendelsohn, Annie Barnes and Carolyn Chapman all totaling two goals each. Cam Edson, Lizzy Chaoman and Murray all each scored once. Mendelsohn also dished out a pair of assists.

Each keeper stood tall for her squad to help take the game to the trio of overtimes, with Haley Williamson picking up the win for the Patriots with seven saves and Hamilton Ibbeken posting 10 saves for the Warriors.

Magargee finished with four goals, an assist and five draw controls as she filled up the score book. Ellie Allen put together a similarly strong outing with two goals, two assists and seven draw controls. Snyder had a pair of goals.
