Albemarle girls indoor team wins first Conference 16 title

Albemarle’s girls indoor track team needed every point it could get Wednesday as the Patriots squeaked out their first indoor Conference 16 title 141.50-139 over second place Atlee.

Kathryn Mayo helped Albemarle out in a big way with a pair of victories in the 500-meters and 1000-meters. The 1000 became a podium sweep for the Patriots when Ryann Helmers and Halley Dillenbeck checked in at second and third behind Mayo. Helmers also won the 1600 with Kenzie Lloyd right behind her as the runner-up for Albemarle.

Gabriella Bock won the 3200-meters with Lloyd taking third while Anna Blank won the high jump. Malia Shelton and Emma Graham both tied for third in the high jump to also give the Patriots a points boost.

Kaila Ragland didn’t win any events but scored huge points for the Patriots as she took third in the 55-meter dash, fifth in the 300-meters and second in the long jump.

The Patriots’ relay teams did well too, winning the 4×400, taking second in the 4×200 and third in the 4×800.

Orange’s girls finished sixth as a team, with Jazmin Carter taking fourth in the 55 hurdles and fifth in the long jump.
