Albemarle girls fall to Massaponax

Albemarle’s girls may have lost, but Tuesday was a step in the right direction for the Patriots. After a frustrating Saturday loss to Monticello, Albemarle’s inexperienced roster bounced back and took Massaponax to the brink, falling 42-37 in a close game where the Panthers pulled away at the free-throw line.

“I told them that as long we’re competing, and we did, I’m fine,” said Albemarle coach Harry Terrell. “We have to compete.”

Freshman Keturah Johnson led Albemarle with 11 points while lacrosse star Connor Carson finished with nine points. Stephanie Beverly led Massaponax with 17 points.

The Panthers put together a big third quarter to take control of the game, but Albemarle rallied and made it a back-and-forth contest down the stretch.

The Patriots hit the road Friday to take on North Stafford.
