Albemarle boys track wraps up another Northwest Region title

Albemarle’s boys track and field team pulled off a rare feat Thursday, winning a second straight Northwest Region title on the strength of a pair of strong performances by Anthony Kostelac and Jordan Hill.

Hill swept the three jumping events at the Prince George Sports Complex in Landover, Md., winning the long, high and triple jumps, while also scoring points for the Patriots with and eight place finish in the 55-meter dash and a third place in the 300-meter dash. The senior took the triple by nearly two full feet.

Kostelac sped to wins in the 1,000 and 1,600 meter runs, besting Colonial Forge sophomore David Pennesi in the mile and Stafford’s Jacob Lysher in the 1,000. He also anchored a second place Albemarle finish in the 4×800. Mark Baucom, Denis Peskov and Rowen Perry rounded out the 4×800 team.

Summer Shepherd, an Albemarle junior, won the pole vault for the Patriots girls, winning by six inches. Albemarle freshman Casey Russell placed fifth in the vault.
