Albemarle boys tennis moves to Northwest semis

The Albemarle boys tennis team defeated Patrick Henry, Roanoke 5-0 in the Northwest Region quarterfinals on Monday. Due to heavy rain in the area, the match was played indoors at Boar’s Head. With no sun and wind to contend with, the home team rolled through nearly every singles match. The one exception was at No. 5, where Mike Barton was challenged by Patrick Henry’s Joe Jarvis.

“When I watched the Patrick Henry players warm up, I knew Mike would have the toughest match. Jarvis is a polished player and could very well have been playing in the top spot for PH”, said Albemarle coach Chip Grobmyer.

Barton had to fight hard to pull out the first set 7-6 and led in the second 2-1 before play was halted when Brian Chen recorded the fifth and deciding point.

Albemarle will take on the winner of the Gar-Field/Stonewall Jackson match on Wednesday. If Gar-Field wins, Albemarle will travel to Gar-Field for a 3:00 start. If Stonewall Jackson wins, Albemarle will host the semifinals at a time to be determined.
